Episode 2 | Sliver of Silver → Listen

The Hero I Didn’t Recognize Yet: How Mentorship Changes with Age

When I first met Denise, I didn’t see her as a mentor. She was just the engineering tech with the gray hair roots, the one trying to hide it in the fab bathroom mirror. But mentorship isn’t always about grand gestures or formal titles. Sometimes, it’s about the quiet, almost invisible ways someone makes your career possible—without either of you realizing it at the time.

The Sliver of Silver Denise’s gray hair wasn’t just a detail—it was a symbol. A sliver of silver she couldn’t quite conceal, a marker of time passing in an industry that had already decided she was past her prime. But that sliver was also a thread connecting her to me, and to everyone else who’s ever felt the weight of being ‘replaced.’ It’s the same anxiety we see today with AI: the fear that accumulated knowledge, once valuable, is now a liability. Denise was my first lesson in how quickly the tables can turn—and how the people we overlook often hold the keys to our own survival.

Mentorship Revisited Back then, I didn’t recognize Denise as a mentor. I was too focused on my own path, my own fears. But looking back, I see how her presence—her resilience, her quiet defiance—shaped my understanding of what it means to navigate an industry that’s always hungry for the next new thing. Mentorship isn’t always about advice. Sometimes, it’s about witnessing—seeing someone else endure, adapt, and persist, and realizing you can too.

🐦 Canary Question — Who quietly made your career possible—and have you ever told them? I’d love to hear your stories of unsung mentors.
